The Home Front
I remember my late aunts describing how, in wartime, they used to paint their legs with gravy browning and then paint a line up the back to simulate stockings. Life on the home front was all about make-do and mend, and the government issued many leaflets ranging from Home defence, What to do in a gas attack, Digging for victory, PotatoPete’s recipe book to How to look after your pets in war time. I see these leaflets in war museums and never fail to be fascinated.
During the blackout householders had to ensure that no light could be seen through their windows and special blackout material was available for curtains which we children used after the war for dressing up. Air Raid Prevention wardens patrolled the streets after dark ensuring that no chinks of light could attract enemy bombers. In the painting Messerschmitt over Footdee I am the ARP Warden not the naked temptress. |
